HAMTRAMCK, Mich. – When the going gets tough, the tough still earn a point.
Detroit City FC did just that Saturday night after being outplayed but still found a way to earn a 1-1 draw with visiting Tampa Bay Rowdies in a USL-championship match in front of over 7,000 fans at Keyworth Stadium.
The Le Rouge (8-4-3 USL) still earn a point in the USL-Championship Eastern Conference standings to move to remain in fifth place with 27 points just two points behind Tampa Bay (8-4-5) that moved to 29 points after the tie.
Tampa Bay outshot Detroit City 21-5 overall, including 5-2 with shots on frame and even held a 9-1 edge on cornerkicks.
Meanwhile, Detroit City played a man down after Abdoulaye Diop was issued his second yellow card and ensuing soft red car in the 59th minute, forcing the Le Rouge to play a man down with 10 players for the remaining 31-minutes plus stoppage time.
Still, Detroit City scored first on a goal by Elvis Emoh in the 71st minute to give the Le Rouge the 1-0 advantage.
The lead stood until the fourth minute of stoppage time at the tail end of the second half. Nick Moon booted home an equalizer in the 94th minute to earn the stalemate in the waning moments of the clash.
Nathan Steinwascher made four saves on the night, as the Le Rouge defense also made sure that 16 of the Rowdies’ 21 shots were off target. Tampa Bay’s Jordon Farr made one save during the draw, as only two of Detroit City’s shots were on target.
Detroit City FC host Memphis 901 FC next Saturday at Keyworth Stadium at a time to be determined.
