CEDAR SPRINGS, Mich. – Losing 13 players to graduation or club soccer might signal a rebuilding campaign for some teams.
Not for Hudsonville Unity Christian.
The Division 3 top-ranked Crusaders captured their fifth straight postseason win Wednesday with a 5-0 shutout over 14th-ranked Freeland at Cedar Springs to advance to the state finals for the third year and 16th time overall.
Unity Christian (21-1-1) will face fifth-ranked Grosse Ile in the Division 3 state finals Saturday at 1 p.m. at Michigan State University’s DeMartin Stadium in a rematch of last year’s D-3 state title game won by Unity Christian (3-0).
Not bad for a team that brought back just four starters and eight total players from last season’s state championship run.
Unity Christian, which owns a 107-11 scoring edge this season despite graduating 12 players and losing one high-level sophomore to ECNL club soccer, now has 14 shutouts in 23 games on the campaign. The Crusaders have scored 4.66 goals a game and have posted a sterling team goals-against-average of 0.48.
The Crusaders, who were making their 20th Final Four appearances dating back to 1998, are 11-4 all-time in state finals games and the 11 state titles ranks only second to Madison Heights Bishop Foley’s 12 state crowns.
Unity Christian lost just one game this season back on May 22, falling to Division 1 top-ranked Hudsonville (3-2) in the last week of the regular season in a game featuring two of the best programs in the state the last few years. On May 24, the Crusaders tied Division 2 top-ranked Spring Lake (1-1) in the Ottawa Kent Conference-Blue Division Tournament finals – and Spring Lake advanced to the Division 2 state finals this weekend.
Against Freeland, Unity Christian scored three times in the first half and added two more goals in the second half to move into the state finals on the strength of its fifth straight shutout and 27-0 scoring edge in the postseason.
Michigan State commit and Miss Soccer candidate Ava Lutke volleyed home a set piece from sophomore Ava Steen with 25:07 remaining in the first half which eventually proved to be the game winner.
Sophomore Avery Decker headed home a Steen cornerkick with 11:00 to go in the first half, while sophomore Kiersten White knocked in a loose ball in the box with 1:32 remaining before halftime for the 3-0 lead at the break.
Unity Christian was not done, as Kyla Kobrzycki scored on a 1-v-1 opportunity with 14:21 left, while Lutke mopped up a rebound following a free kick by Steen was stopped near the line.
Senior Anna Newhof finished with five saves for her team’s 14th clean sheet of the season.
Adalyn Senkowski made 12 saves for Freeland (15-5-5), which was making its sixth-ever appearance in the state semifinals but came up agonizingly short of a third state finals berth.
