GROSSE ILE, Mich. – Kyle Lesperance admits that his team surprised many when they made a run to the Division 3 state title game last season.
The Red Devils were somewhat young with a small senior class and pulled a few upsets along the way before falling to 11-time state champion Hudsonville Unity Christian (3-0) in that D-3 state finals at Michigan State University.
Unity Christian had a large senior class and dominated that game from start to finish.
Lesperance is hoping for a much better contest this time around. Fifth-ranked Grosse Ile will face top-ranked Hudsonville Unity Christian on Saturday at 1 p.m. again at MSU’s DeMartin Stadium.
“I do think we surprised some teams last year. I don’t think that most expected us to make that run,” said Lesperance. “We might have exceeded expectations. We put it together at the right time. This year we expected to be able to advance (deep) in the tournament. We’ve had to beat some really good teams along the way. But we believed we could do it.”
The Red Devils (17-2-5) defeated longtime power and nemesis Birmingham-Detroit Country Day (1-0) in the state semifinals in a shootout – the first time in program history that Grosse Ile was able to defeat the Yellowjackets. Grosse Ile has outscored it s five opponents 31-4 in the postseason, although the Red Devils cruised in the district rounds with lopsided victories over Taylor Prep (15-0) and Flat Rock (9-1) before the competition stiffened up quite a bit.
The Red Devils had to defeat Ann Arbor Greenhills (2-1) and honorable mention Ovid-Elsie (4-2) to win their regional before slipping past 2021 state champion Detroit Country Day in the semis.
“I thought Greenhills was a little tougher than anticipated, but they are a quality team from the (CHSL-AA Division). Then we played Ovid-Elsie and they have 3-4 really good athletes that gave us some problems,” said Lesperance, who carries an 80-17-14 record over six seasons at the helm. “We’ve had to beat three quality teams the last three rounds. But that Country Day game was big because I’ve done some research going back through records and (the MHSAA) website and I cannot find us beating Country Day until this week. Last year, we beat Flint Powers in the semifinals and I don’t think we’ve beaten them very many times in our history.”
Over the last 25-plus years, not many teams can brag about defeating Hudsonville Unity Christian in the state tournament. The Crusaders (21-1-1) have won 11 state crowns and finished as the state runner-up four more times. Since reaching the Final Four for the first time in 1998, the Crusaders have reached at least the state semifinals 20 times and lost in the semis four times. Saturday’s clash with Grosse Ile will give Unity Christian a chance to win a 12th state title, which would tie the record currently held by Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
Not if an improved Grosse Ile side has a say in that.
“I think we are better than last year,” admitted Lesperance. “But Unity is Unity. They are always good. I know they lost some good players, but they always seam to replace them each year. They reload.”
Grosse Ile has outscored the opposition 98-19 this season, although eight of those goals conceded were in the first three games in the season – Division 1 top-five Saline (5-0 loss) and in a draw with Huron League rival New Boston Huron (3-3). The Red Devils’ only other loss came against New Boston Huron (3-0) in mid-May in the league championship match. Grosse Ile finished second in the eight-school Huron League.
Grosse Ile is on a seven-game win streak that features a 40-4 scoring edge and four shutouts. The Red Devils have 15 total clean sheets this season.
Unity Christian lost late in the regular season to Hudsonville (3-2), as Hudsonville was last year’s Division 1 state runner-up and ranked No. 1 all season until being upset in a shootout by Caledonia in the district finals. The Crusaders lost 12 players to graduation and their top sophomore to ECNL club soccer this year. Still, Unity Christian provides a stern test as the Crusaders own a 105-11 scoring edge with 14 shutouts and have yet to concede a goal in the state tournament (27-0) with wins over three state-ranked teams along their postseason journey.
Grosse Ile’s defense has been stout all season except for a pair of games, led by seniors Addison Nemeth (LB) and Madelynn McNeil (CB) and juniors Alaina Korody (CB) and Olivia Zuccaro (RB) playing in front of sturdy junior Monica Arndt.
Junior Mallory Botten (F) leads the team with 20 goals and 21 assists, while junior Aubree Korody (M) has 14 goals and 13 assists in a well-balanced, experienced offensive machine.
“Mallory and Aubree have played great and lead the offense, but we have a lot of girls that have 5-10 goals or 5-10 assists and something like 20 different girls have scored for us,” noted Lesperance. “And our defense has got better and better all season.”
Will it be enough to dethrone mighty Unity Christian?
“We’ll prepare for them as best we can,” said Lesperance. “Unity is the (benchmark) of D-3 soccer in the state and always one of the top teams year-in and year-out. We’ll see how we stack up with them this year. They always have a lot of very talented players.”
